Waiting for Spring to Come

Just two little illustrations that I made a few weeks ago (for a pharmaceutial company that sells clinical nutrition). Nothing very special, but I never really made a similar illustration so it was a bit of an experiment, too... I used ballpoint to make a kind of a very light grisaille and then colored it with watercolor. Easy-peasy... Only, I didn't find any of my black ballpoint pens, so I had to use a blue one.

It's still very wintry over here and I'm so much longing for Spring and Summer.

I posted this on my other blog, but somehow felt that i needed it here, too.

I want to rev up this blog a little, not so that it gets more attention, but because I really want to use it as some on-line journal, a place where I can keep track of my own progress or lack of it... with the added benefit of being accountable by readers.

I've been struggling, in the past two or so years with getting things done... or made, rather...

The thing is, that in about two months, I, in some miraculous way, that is yet unknown to me, have to be done with my diploma work, so I thought that maybe it was a good idea to use this blog as a way of keeping track of how I'm doing. We'll just see.

We started rephotographing our old slides and negatives (rolls)... We laugh a lot. In most of the photos of my early childhood, I think, I look like a boy, beacause I had short hair... these ones are some exceptions.

A Very Old One

This is a very old pastel painting that I made well before university, sometime in 2001.
Actually, I'm not sure I still like it, but I think I do. Has quite a few faults.
Both of these are detail shots only. The entire one is 50 by 70 cms, and I made it on a deep red sheet of paper, that is what shows thru. I painted it on the floor. My then-boyfriend made photos of my progress. One day I might post those, too, 'cause I think they are funny.

Priya drew my attention to the fact that lately I haven't posted artworks of mine. Yeah, true. I haven't worked very much lately. But I'm sure that sooner or later I'll get back to making artworks (other than graphic design). Actually, this is a kind of a moral obligation of mine, as one of my teachers worded it. I dunno. Maybe it is. Well, if that's what I'm meant to do, then I'd better do it. I really don't know why I've been so lazy nowadays, but to be honest, I don't want to beat myself up about is. Still, I hope I'll soon get my act together.

Photos that I made in Parc Güell, Barcelona. I deliberately oversaturated these images, which might make them seem a bit kitschy, but I guess they convey the overall atmosphere of the place.
Gaudí was a genious. Decorating with broken tiles is such a good idea. And it's recycling. A green way to home decor. And it can be real art, too.

So, I made this the other day. Itsy Bitsy Chocolate Chip Cookies from Heidi at 101cookbooks.
They turned out pretty well. Nothing groundbraking, but they taste very good. And it took a whole lot less labor and mess than I thought it would.
Also, I'm rather pleased with the photos I managed to take about them... don't know what made me photograph them against a magazine back cover, but it seems to me that it was a good idea. Now Lara Stone (in Louis Vuitton) is lying there trapped under the itsy bitsy cookies, seemingly wanting to have some... :P

An Old One

This is an old "academic-style" drawing that I made some two years ago at the university.
I'm about to attend the life-drawing class again. Life drawing is mandatory only in the first two years, but I think it could do good. I'm freaked out tho. Haven't drawn for a year and a half or so.

In the Kitchen: Broccoli Tomato Thing

The other day I made this broccoli thing for myself. This was something I just improvised in a kind of a use-what-you-have way, and it turned out to be delicious.
I sautéed some broccoli in a little olive oil, and after that I added some canned tomatoes, salt, black pepper, nutmeg and a bit of garlic. Then I added a whole egg, sitrred it, and added some blue cheese, stirred it a few times again, and it was ready. And I liked it a lot. The broccoli still remained crunchy, which was far from being a problem to me.

Being 36, I can now really see that my body is aging. It's not something I want to stop. But I think that there are some things I can do to slow it down. I really want to enjoy my life in a good, strong and healthy body, so I decided to incorporate regular excercise into my days. Regular excercise benefits not just the body but mind and spirit as well. We'll see.
First off, I'll do the beginner's workout from bodyrock.tv once a day.

I'm rather tired of all those "Keep Calm and Carry on" posters and various versions of. It's nice and all but too widely spread.
The reason I put this version up here is to inspire myself to really get to making things. I'm very good at thinking about what beautiful things I would make or do, but most of the time I'm rather reluctant to start making or doing those beautiful things.
Getting really excited about something is a good way to start and I think that excitement is something one can generate in ones self.

There are quite a few things I'd love to craft. A few of them are:

* A wooden necklace. (I think the one on the left is from Dries van Noten and the one on the right is from LuaLua.) As a teenager I would make a few odd necklaces... One from a little book on economics, one from the counter of a digital clock, one from little branch pieces tied together with copper wire, one from a smaller straw puppet, and so on... most of these were just repurposed stuff that I would wear as pendant on a leather string.
* Sewn little friends. (I guess I got these images from ffffound.com)
* A nice tote bag for shopping. I've made a few of these as Christmas presents for some family members. Only, I really ran out of time so I just couldn't make one for myself. I made them from heavy IKEA fabrics lined with yellow-white gingham.* Some kind of an apron. Though I might end up buying an apron from IKEA, as that's where I have most of my kitchen towels too.I'm not very crafty nowadays, so there's a possibility I'll never make any of the above.
I remember never finishing any of my knitting projects as a kid. So in the end I had one sock, one glove, and at least 3 or 4 half-knitted vests and sweaters. Oh I did finish a really long scarf that I couln't wear beause the yarn I made it from was too harsh on my skin.
My sewing projects turned out to be much more of a success. Even tho I've always had a few half-sewn or cut but never-sewn items in drawers or closets, the were a lot more I actually managed to finish. I started sewing at the age of ten or so. And ever since my sewing skills grew (I hope). I've made numerous clothes for myself and some for others. I like sewing. So much that about 8 years ago I made a living from custom sewing bridal and evening gowns. It was rewarding, but after a few years I got tired. And it's just now that I'm again getting into the mood of wanting to sew. So, we'll see, whether it's back or not.

I have a huge folder of "Stuff I like" and with a few exemptions I make the sloppy job of simply downloading the photos I like instead of renaming them with the correct source so later I would know. First Shots at Photography: Still Lives

I'm no photographer. But now that I got my own still shot camera, I just thought it was time I started experimenting with it.
The camera is an old 5 megapx SONY of the bridge category, it was my brother's camera that I got as a Christmas present, now that he bought himself a new Nikon D90. The LCD screen is broken but I can still use the viewfinder. Also, when I shoot indoors, without flash, the outcome is very noisy.
Still, I'm really happy about my new little toy.
I also made a few self portraits. Later on I'll definitely post some.
As for the still lives, I intentionally overdid Photoshop work so that the pictures would look somewhat like paintings. I also wanted them to be studies on color.

Freedom of Speech

So, this is the other poster I submitted for the Poster4Tomorrow campaign.
As for the copy, I actually wanted to put there a few lines from Tracy Chapman's Why. But then I reworded if so as not to risk any infringement on copyrights. The copy would have been this:
"...the time is coming soon, when the blind remove their blinders and the speechless speak the truth..."
I guess this poster was to a large degree inspired by all the dotty images that I've recently saved in my Stuff I Like library. :)
Process is so funny. I actually wanted to make my posters much more "hand-made". That would still be me. I love collaged paper. I was also planning on making some embroidery that would be part of a poster. But during the process, and of course also because I tend to postpone everything up till the last minutes, my posters somehow got to be very simple. And I don't mind.
I'm starting to believe that process is more important than the outcome.

Freedom of Speech

One of the posters that I submitted for Poster4Tomorrow's campaign for Freedom of Speech.
The idea behind this was that people that are not granted the Freedom of Speech, might try to communicate in other ways, i.e. through their works. I'm not sure whether the illustration is clear or not. These are supposed to be mouth-blown glass objects, inspired by a video I saw on YouTube about a Chinese glass factory.

I cannot say that Cézanne is my favourite painter. Frankly, I don't even think he was a very good draughtsman. I think he simply could not draw. But what he could, was paint!
What I feel for him, is some deep respect. I think his approach to painting is really what a painter's approach to painting should be. He was thinking in terms of specks of color. In my opinion, that's what a painting is all about. Specks of color.

I've been considering taking up painting for quite a while. Really.
What keeps me from really doing it, is some fear from mediocrity and amateurism.
But, I gotta start somewhere, so I decided to get over this debilitating fear. I kind of have to understand that at the outset, I, most possibly, won't be as good as I want to be, but that this fact simply should not make me stop or even worse, not start at all.
The reason I'm putting this out, is that I hope this would put some responsibilty on me, to really start. This post is like a promise to be kept. Well, I'm not very good at keeping promises, but nevertheless... The promise is there, and I have to keep it sometime.
I post some still lives from Paul Cézanne, that I find inspiring.

We had to design bottle and labels for three kinds of spirits. This was a new territory, going 3D, but I enjoyed it. I'd love to learn studiomax but this time I still depended on my brother with it.

These gesture drawings were made at our school's summer camp site back in 2007. The site is located in Tihany (Hungary) at a lake up on a hill. The little donkey was not part of the wildlife but the ducks were.
It's too bad we only went to this camp just once, at the beginning of our second year at university.

Just look at the rhythm. Needless to say, I love Edgar Degas.

It can be clearly seen, that the first painting is an earlier one.

In my opinion, this is tendence that we see with great painters: as they grow older and more experienced, they don't bother to say more with more, instead, they manage to say more with less. And I think that is why the lower two are so fabulous. I just can't get enough of them.

I'm sure that sooner or later I'll take up painting.

I don't know much about Vladimir Sutnar, pioneer of what we now call information design, but I certainly like these pieces from his oeuvre. Diagonals make these works move. Also, I like the idea of combining photography with simple shapes. And I like that he uses color sparingly (regardless of whether this is due to contemporary printing technology or not).

As its title reveals, this book is a concise history of graphic design. In my opinion this is a very informative and very inspirational book. Unlike bad history books, this one is loaded with photos to accompany the texts, alas, with rather small B/W photos.

Two Back Studies

Two recent life studies from school. They don't seem perfect but they are not bad either.
This semester, for the first time, it was not mandatory for us to draw (I mean life drawing), but I enrolled in a life drawing class so that I won't "forget" how to draw. I don't need to tell that I didn't bother to attend up till 3 weeks ago when I realized I had a lot to catch up on, so I went crazy and started drawing 3 or 4 times a week. There was one day when I made some 20 or 30 drawings (mostly croquis though). At first I really thought I had forgotten how to draw, but to my great surprise, I hadn't. Maybe my mind kept on drawing while my hands took a rest from work.

Aliens

Last semester we had to "design" aliens, supposing that we discovered a new planet with life.
My creatures have powerful antennae in their bodies thus they can receive any wavelength in the whole universe, over any distance. Their favourit place to "receive" is Earth. They love Earth's culture and painting (especially Baroque).
They have no real skin. Instead, their body is covered mostly with small ledlike cells. Thus they can simply (with just a thought) project any picture on their body. The above ones project paintings found in Earth's museums. Funny thing, but they can somehow feel what these paintings are all about and the pictures they project on themselves somehow reflect who they are. But of course they can change these "chlothes" any moment if they want to.

Whenever I'm in doubt (and sometimes I am) about my own capabilities either in art or otherwise, it's good to read texts or just quotes that remind me of the fact that I'm a spirit capable of virtually anything. It's so easy to forget this.
Me as an artist tend to fear being wrong. This leads to creating mediocre stuff or sometimes even to not creating at all. I know I have to be more courrageous and not fear being wrong. On my way to being a great (or at least good) artist I will make many mistakes, and I should not be afraid of this.

In the Graphic Design History class we had to draw from various names of graphic designers that were put on little pieces of paper, and then make a 4-page publication about that guy in a style that he used to have. My Crest

Last semester we had to create a crest for ourselves, and this is mine. The way I make such a thing is that I first draw it on paper, than scan it, and recreate it in Adobe Illustrator, so the result is a scalable vector image.
I also made a colored version (red and orange as far as I remember), but I prefer this B/W one.
I don't use it though, maybe I should.

Another poster for Billy Eliot

Another version of the Billy Eliot poster that I made for school. I myself prefer this one over the previous one, as here it is not that obvious that the upper arm on the left is too short. I don't think that this poster conveys what Billy Eliot is all about, but as a poster, it's not bad. The main idea here was simply that Billy was the only boy in the ballet school in his hometown.

Inspiration: Sculptures in the Cemetery

Odd thing, but you can find beauty in a cemetery. These pictures were not taken by me, I actually downoladed them from the Net, but I think I will visit one of our cemeteries sometime.
It's marvellous how these sculptures manage to combine death, pain and sorrow with real beauty. These sculptures are from the tombs of a sculptor that he shares with his wife and the tomb of the wife of another great sculptor, both Hungarian.
Though I have never made a sculpture in my life, I tend to be attracted to them. This sunday I'm leaving for art camp. I'll be there for two weeks, and I'll spend a whole week making sculptures or at least being introduced into sculpting.

Linocut print

This is a linocut print that I made at school last semester. We had a new subject about printmaking techniqes and we had to try all major types of these techniques including lithography, drypoint and etching. I truly enjoyed them.
I will scan these prints as I think much is lost at photographing them.

This is our "peace dove" at the end of the corridor that leads to our studio at school. They don't bother to repair this broken window (or any other broken windows), but I just don't mind.

This sole was made as a school assignment. Everyone had received a word starting with the letter "t", and had to make a "t" into an image representing the word. Of course, sole in Hungarian starts with a "t".

Whether in fashion, interior design, graphic design or fine arts, Black-and-white is almost always a very powerful combination. Maybe because our world is very colorful already. Also, this combination gives the highest possible contrast. Black-and-white looks elegant. Depending on their proportion to each other, black-and-white can look fresh and pleasant, or it can look frightful, as illustrated by the above pictures.

I find this simple composition extremely nice. It is not symmetrical but balanced. I like the idea of taking something very simple, like this torn fence and making it into something really artful.
Apparently, this aquatint print was made by a teacher at our university.

A women's weekly magazine

Cover and a few spreads from a women's weekly magazine that we had to make last semester as an assignment in school. We had to take an actual national weekly mag (everyone the same one), and remake twelve pages (also fixed by our teacher). I worked a lot on it. We also had to take into account that this was not an expensive glossy magazine, that it is to be produced over ad over every week, and we had to consider what possibly could be expected or accepted by the audience. In the end I was rather pleased with the result.

Logos made by hand

I made these logos at the admittance exam for the university. As I told before, we had no access to computers, thus we had to do everything by hand. I handed in the sketches as well, so that the teachers can see my thinking that went into the resultant logos. I quite like these logos. My favorite is the middle one in the upper row, where the negative shapes form a letter K. The assignment was to make a logo for a small theatre called KAMRA (meaning Pantry).

But let me return to the "drawing side" of life and share with you the above drawings. Barcsay was a teacher of my current anatomy (Anatomy for Artists) teacher, whom I like a lot. Barcsay was a constructivist painter. Still, he took on himself the responsibility of teaching human anatomy to the artist wannabes at the Academy (university), and devised a sytem for teaching anatomy. We still study by his system. Even in graphic design, many times I find the inspiration I need in fashion, especially for color. Whenever I make a moodboard, I would browse the Web or flip through magazines to find the mood that later on I want to convey in my design, and quite often, I find it in outfits or fashion photography.
As for Christian Lacroix, he's among my all-time favourites. Excentric but lovable.

3D object with felt pens

This image is from the entrance exam for the university. The assignment was simply to take an A4-size sheet, make a 3D-object out of it and depict it any graphic way you like. This was the first ever study picture that I made using felt tip pens. I thought it would be a good challange, and it was. I used two pens, a darker redish one and an olivey green. The challange was not really when to use which pen, but to manage to finish on time, as time was short and the papaer so big. Still, it turned out to be a good idea to depict the object this way, because most everyone used charcoal or graphite, and this was a handy way to stick out from the crowd. All in all, there were some 270 people wanting to get admited to the Graphic Design Dept. of the university, and only 16 were chosen.

Bridal Gowns

These are some bridal gowns I designed for my mother's little bridal company (at http://www.izabell.hu/) a few years ago. They make bridal gowns for brides as well as for bridal shops. They make one collection a year and every year I try to help them out with a few designs. I'm not making an overstatement if I say that their team made up of my mother, a few seamstresses , one or two outside beadworkers and one machine embroiderer make so beautiful work that it nearly looks like couture work. This means that when I design something it sometimes looks even better than in my wildest dreams. This is the real joy of creating, to see some plan come to life.
Another thing I love is making embroidery patterns.
Some twenty years ago my dream was to become a fashion designer, the best in the world. Right after high school I wanted to go to study fashion design at the University for Applied Arts, but I was not admitted. Actually I was not even aware of what they expected from the applicants. I did not try again, I went to study economics instead. Now I know that I would not have been the best in the world, but I still think that I could make a living as a fashion designer. It's a pity though that nearly the whole of fashion is only marketing today. Just read The End of Fashion by Teri Agins.

This is a cover for a fictious catalog of musical instruments. I made this at the admittance exam for the university. We had to do everything by hand. The exam lasted 8 days long, that is, two weeks. This assignment was given at the last day of the first week.
What I wanted to convey here, was the feeling a guitarplayer might have on stage, having all lights turned on him. Also, I wanted to convey some energy.

This was done for Geometry class. Not a good photo as I had to take it through glass. We had to take a painting with clear perspective and remake it, shifting its space in some way. I chose this Vermeer and painted it from a 90 degree viewpoint.

These are three yet unretouched versions of pages from a so-called calendar that we had to make last year (at school). All we had to do was make abstract representations of the twelve months. Actually I scanned these montages that I made from pages of an old stock photography catalog called Taxi (I think it's from Getty Images). As I told before I somehow love paper montage even though it might look somewhat childish, amateurish or simply old-fashioned. Once scanned and printed, they look more polished than viewed in reality. The above representations are January, February and October, respectively. In October 1956 we had a revolution here in Hungary, that's why I didn't make this month into a simple Autumn scene but made it a bit more stressful and more warlike. Otherwise I simply made compositions in color and line (the edges) that made me feel the flair of the respective months.
